ALL IRELAND CREDIT UNION SCHOOLS QUIZ
100 TEAMS FIGHT IT OUT IN NAIL BITING FINAL AT THE RDS, DUBLIN
(7th April 2013) Nerves were evident this morning as the finalists of the All Ireland Credit Union Schools Quiz and their very vocal supporters gathered at the main hall of the RDS in Dublin. After months of local and regional quiz rounds - the stage was set for the 100 teams to battle it out in the grand finals.
Matthew Jennings, Cathal Hanrahan, Darragh Jordan and Ethan Minogue representing Breaffy National School Made it through to this Years Final.
At 1.30pm, under the watchful eye of Quiz Master – Marty Whelan, the calls of encouragement from parents, grandparents, teachers where quickly quietened and the teams got down to serious business! It was a nail biting final few rounds but in the end it was(Winners will be announced at 4pm).
Competition A(children under 11):
First Place - St Joseph's Boys School Rathfarham, Dublin
Runner up - Scoil Mhuire gan Small, Ballinasloe
Competition B (children 11 - 13):
First Place -St Corbans National school, Naas
Joint Runner Ups - Glasheen Boys School, Cork and St Etchens National School, Kinnegad
The annual event, now in its 22nd year has become the highlight of the school calendar, attracting over 25,000 participants in over 300 venues throughout the 32 counties.
The Quiz was run throughout the winter months in communities all over Ireland by volunteers from 487 ILCU affiliated credit unions. With the aim of encouraging teamwork among young school children under the age of 13, the questions for the Quiz are compiled by primary school teachers and covered topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport.
The National School Quiz took place Friday 1st February 2013 @ 7.30pm night in Davitt College.
33 teams took part from 16 local national schools and many thanks to all the students, teachers and parents who attended.

All Ireland winning hurler Henry Shefflin and Olympic boxer Paddy Barnes today joined Marty Whelan and the Irish League of Credit Unions to launch the 2013 All – Ireland Credit Union Schools Quiz.
The Quiz which is now one of the most popular events of the school calendar, attracts about 25,000 participants North and South of the island. This annual event, which is now in its 22nd year, is run through the winter months in over 300 hundred venues in towns and communities across the country and is run by volunteers from over 487 ILCU affiliated credit unions.
The Quiz questions are taken from the primary curriculum and prepared by primary school teachers. The questions which are aimed at children under the age of 13, cover topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport.
The quiz consists of two knock out stages at local and regional level and culminates in a National Final Day in Dublin in early April 2013 where 100 qualifying teams compete
Speaking at the 2013 Quiz Launch, ILCU Head of Communications, Mandy Johnston said:
We are delighted to be here with two of Irelands’ most prolific sports people marking both the launch and the 22nd year of the All Ireland Credit Unions Schools quiz.
We are expecting the 2013 event to be the biggest and most popular quiz to date and we look forward to seeing the qualifiers at the RDS next April for the big event.
I want to say a big thank you to our volunteers from credit unions nationwide who work incredibly hard to make sure this event is a success year on year.
Registration for the 2013 Schools Quiz is now open, for registration forms or further information, contact your local credit union or visit the ILCU website at www.creditunion.ie. Teams must submit their entry on the official entry form by Friday 18th of January 2013 to their local credit union.
About the All-Ireland Schools Quiz
The Quiz is divided into two sections: Competition A for children up to 11 years and Competition B for children between 11 and 13 years.
- Local quiz winners go through to the Regional Finals and regional winners and runners-up (100 teams of 4 children) will compete for the National titles in April 2012.
- Local winners will receive prizes from their local Credit Union.
- Regional winners and runners-up will also receive prizes and their schools will receive cheques.
- The National winners and runners-up receive a silver salver, significant personal prizes – and their schools are each awarded a substantial cheque.
- Every finalist receives a special certificate marking their achievement.
